It was ten thirty by that point, and Penny didn’t have much else to do besides go to bed. After playing around on her phone for awhile and sending a few messages — one of them to Emma — she lay back in bed and started a playlist on her phone.

As she and Jesse stood on the porch earlier that evening, her stomach doing little flips, it was a very similar situation to ones she’d been in with Stephen multiple times. But somehow this felt different. She’d been slowly realizing it the entire night as they hung out, but couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was. Now, lying in her bed with no other distractions, it came to her.

The things she did with Jesse — taking care of Ava, talking to other friends, even watching TV — were things she could no longer do with Stephen. Jesse was a real person, right in front of her. Stephen was nothing more than a memory, barely even real.

And Jesse was right about her mother, she knew. She’d had the same gut feeling about things from day one. But if she stopped talking to her, what would happen? What sort of unintended consequences could come from it? She especially wondered about Ava, who had no say in this, wasn’t even sentient enough to have a say. But she and her mother were basically a package deal.

Penny went over the information again and again in her head. Finally, her thoughts wore her out and she fell asleep.
